Back on the Green Benches

I’m back on the green benches in Parliament after a brief spell recuperating from an op and am delighted to report two items of good news.

Firstly the consultation has just begun that will pave the way for a fairer funding formula for our schools. As you will know I’ve been part of a group campaigning to correct the historic injustice whereby pupils in Taunton Deane receive £2000 less per pupil than the best funded areas in the country, which is an absolute travesty. The new deal also includes a new formula for those with special educational needs and from disadvantaged backgrounds. I urge anyone interested to take part in the consultation which can be accessed at: https://consult.educatin.gov.uk/

A second announcement from Government is that the funding for the National Wildlife Crime Unit has been secured for the next 4 years, meaning that many species in the west, including, deer, hare and a range of bird will be protected from merciless persecution. Having campaigned long and hard, alongside World Animal Protection, for this to be retained, I am thrilled that the valuable work of this unit to protect our British wildlife will continue. Some additional money to tackle online wildlife crime is also an added bonus.

As the first Conservative female MP in Somerset I felt it important to contribute to the recent debate on International Women’s Day. Progress is being made to close the gender pay gap and the forthcoming 30 hours of free childcare and shared parental leave arrangements should help women to progress in the workplace. However, we still need more women role models in key positions, although we certainly have some fine ones locally including Penny James C.E of Taunton Deane Council, Rachael Davies at Somerset College and Dr Sam Barrel C.E. of Musgrove. My own speech focused on the thorny issue of women ageing and how we are perceived as we grow older. To go grey or not to go grey, that is the question? Men who gracefully go grey seem to be revered for their experience and wisdom, it is not always the case for women. Another taboo, but it certainly got people talking.

Finally, I must praise the superb team at Musgrove who looked after me so well recently. The NHS has it challenges but we are fortunate to have this hospital on our doorstep, so thank you.
