Transport in Taunton Deane

I understand that one of the challenges of living in a rural area is access to public transport, which is why I will campaign for any improvements necessary that will support the growth of our area and improve accessibility for both residents and visitors alike. Giving local communities the power and the money to unlock growth and development and make the spending decisions that work for them is a key part of the Governments long-term economic plan. I will continue to press Ministers to provide the necessary funds and support with regards to Taunton Deane’s crucial transport links. Trains Taunton Rail Station is vital to not only the residents of Taunton Deane, but also to any future growth that we hope to attract. I recently met with the Rail Minister, Clair Perry, to discuss the upgrade of the station. The Minister confirmed the funding would be provided for a £4.6 million investment, creating a new and re-oriented station gateway and associated facilities. A memorandum of understanding has been signed by Network Rail and other key partners, including First Great Western, Somerset County Council and Taunton Deane Borough Council, indicating the strong commitment each partner has to delivering the scheme. Wellington Station is another key focus for me, and although there are some complexities with the proposals I am hopeful that a new metro style station can be built. Some preliminary discussions have taken place and I will be sure to consult and update residents with any future developments. Roads Securing the funding for the upgrade of the A358 and J25 of the M5 has been a top priority for me since my election, I am well aware of the misery that the long queues and congestion in these areas brings to the local community. I recently submitted my proposals to the Treasury for the latest spending review and I am delighted that the Chancellor has now confirmed the funding will be provided for both of these important projects. I am keen to ensure that the work is carried out with minimal disruption to residents and is done in a way that is sympathetic to our environment. I will be sure to work with key local and national partners in order to help ensure any improvements are carried out in such a way. Buses Ensuring that local bus services provide residents with a reliable and effective service is another key focus area of mine. Delivering services in rural areas is often more difficult and costly than in highly populated regions, that is why current funding arrangements that disproportionally favour urban areas are unsatisfactory. I am now the vice-chair of the All Party Group on Rural Services which aims to advocate for a more efficient delivery of rural services as well as pushing for a fairer funding arrangement. In the meantime I will continue to work with Somerset County Council and bus companies with the aim of delivering a more satisfactory service.
